About the museum
The WalseRama in Nufenen in the Rheinwald is run by the non-profit Stiftung Walserkultur. The Stiftung zur Wahrung der Walserkultur (Foundation for the Preservation of Walser Culture) on Bernhardinerstrasse was entered in the commercial register on April 12, 2016. The impetus was the observation that since the turn of the millennium, more and more old tools, carts and furnishings were being lost from attics and stables through bulky-waste collections. With the construction of the electric power line into the valley in the 1960s, the national highway and the San Bernardino Tunnel, everyday life in the valley had changed fundamentally, and many traditional tasks were abandoned.
The foundation therefore collects and safeguards movable cultural assets of the Walsers and displays them in 22 rooms of a historic suste, built around 1680 at the time when goods were transported over the passes in the Free State of the Three Leagues.
The collection offers insight into the earlier life of the Rheinwald Walsers: the transport of people and goods over the Rheinwald passes by post coach and sled, domestic life, the traditional dairy (Sennerei), woodcraft, and the great wash day, the “Buuchi”. The house can be visited all year as part of free, expert guided tours by appointment. The foundation also publishes brochures on the history of the Rheinwald and invites lectures at the WalseRama.
