About the museum
The Megalith Ausstellung in Bärenburg, a hamlet in the municipality of Andeer in the Schams, is a private exhibition run by Anselmo Gadola. It is dedicated to the cup-marked and sign stones of the Viamala region: rocks and boulders with artificially carved cups and signs that date from prehistoric times and whose meaning remains puzzling to this day.
The starting point is a rock shaped by glaciers in the Arsiert, south of Bärenburg, which still bears such traces of working. Gadola interprets the cup-marked and sign stones in the Schams, the Avers and the Rheinwald as evidence of a calendar system oriented to the annual course of the sun. The exhibition shows how, step by step, these observations lead to a sun symbol within a hexagon enclosed by a circle, and how a grid of coordinates can be laid over the landscape from this, pointing to further sites.
Visitors learn interesting facts about the stones and explore the question of whether they may have served as calendars, as maps or as other means of communication. The exhibition is open daily during the summer half-year; the initiator offers guided tours on request.
