About the museum
Mining has shaped the Ferrera Valley and Schams for centuries. Iron, copper, lead and silver ores were extracted and transported at numerous sites and processed in smelters; mine tunnels, spoil heaps and remains of smelting furnaces can still be found in the landscape today. The first documented mention of ore mining in the Ferrera Valley dates from 1605.
The museum is located in the middle of the village of Innerferrera and is run by the association Erzminen Hinterrhein. The association was founded on December 11, 2009 in Zillis, now has almost 100 members, and, with the support of the municipalities of the region, takes care of preserving, researching and presenting the historical mining sites. It is a partner association of the Freunde des Bergbaus in Graubünden.
In April 2026 the museum reopened with a newly designed exhibition. On the first floor, a large walk-through map shows the most important mining areas along the Hinterrhein. The upper floor covers the extraction and processing of ores; a walk-in mine tunnel with a video installation conveys an impression of the working conditions at the time. The exhibition also presents personalities who shaped regional mining. The association additionally offers guided tours and excursions to the mining areas of the region.
