Museum Rheinwald

Interactive, unattended museum in Splügen on the history and culture of the Rheinwald, from the Walser settlers to the present day.

Opening hoursAdmission CHF 5 Wheelchair accessible

About the museum

The Museum Rheinwald in Splügen is run by the association Heimatmuseum Rheinwald and is housed in the municipal building on Oberdorf, the former manor house of the von Schorsch family. The former local history museum was transformed into a new, interactive museum by a project group in cooperation with the Rheinwald municipality, the Beverin Nature Park and the Stiftung Walserkultur; the concept and scenography come from Studio Capisci in Chur.

The exhibition leads through the history of the valley with historic objects, film footage, interactive stations and narratives. The first room, “Vo woo, wohi?”, tells of the immigration of the Walser settlers and of pack-animal transport over the Rheinwald passes. The second room, “Uuf und aab”, deals with the French occupation and the changes brought by the Kommerzialstrasse in the 19th century. In the third room, “Aalt und nüü”, tradition and modernity meet – from the transformation of farming to the Fasnacht custom “Pschuuri” and the major projects of recent decades.

The texts are trilingual in German, Italian and English. The museum is unattended and open daily all year; visitors explore it on their own.
