About the museum
Battery Moltke was planned as the Kriegsmarine’s Marine Battery 1, to be equipped with four modern 15 cm quick-firing guns in turrets. The guns never arrived because of Allied bombing raids in Europe, so the site was handed to the Army Coastal Artillery, which armed it with 155 mm field guns captured from the French and renamed it Batterie Moltke.
The Channel Islands Occupation Society maintains and restores Number 4 Gun Position, a complex of bunkers linked by underground corridors. It includes a personnel shelter, two ammunition bunkers, the underground emplacement intended for the 15 cm turret gun and an emplacement that holds an original 155 mm French field gun. Volunteers have furnished several rooms and installed exhibits and audiovisual displays about the Occupation, the civilian population and the Liberation.
The charity-run site lies on Les Landes Common and opens only on selected Sundays. A visit can take up to two hours, and a deactivated weapons handling area is set up when the weather allows.
