Over het museum
The Musée Dräi Eechelen is located in the réduit of Fort Thüngen on Kirchberg. The fort was built from 1732 under Austrian rule to strengthen the Fortress of Luxembourg; in 1836 and again from 1859 to 1860 it was modernised and extended under Prussian administration. Today it is the only detached fort of the former fortress that survives, and although part of the above-ground structures has been destroyed, almost all of the underground installations have been preserved.
Until 1980 only a few insiders knew the galleries. From 1980 the réduit was opened up, and in 1990–1991 the entire fort was uncovered. In 1994 UNESCO inscribed the Old Town and the fortifications of Luxembourg on the World Heritage List. In 1996 the Chamber of Deputies decided to create a fortress museum in the réduit of Fort Thüngen, rebuilt according to the plans of 1836/37; a wide mortar joint marks the boundary between historic and reconstructed fabric. On the site of the former earth cover, additional rooms were created with more than 800 m² of usable floor space.
The permanent exhibition in the casemates traces the development of the fortress in the context of the country’s history, from the capture of the city by the Burgundians in 1443 to the construction of the Adolphe Bridge in 1903. Around 500 original objects and documents illustrate the museum’s collections, which belong to the Musée national d’archéologie, d’histoire et d’art. The vaulted and mine-gallery system itself is the most important exhibit.
