Over het museum
The Mudam is Luxembourg’s museum of contemporary art. Its collection goes back to the first acquisitions in the 1990s; the Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean foundation was established in 1998, and the museum opened in 2006. Exhibitions, publications and an artistic and educational programme aim to make contemporary art accessible to a broad public.
The building was designed by I. M. Pei, a Pritzker Prize laureate. It stands in the Dräi Eechelen park next to the former Fort Thüngen, linking the old town with the Kirchberg European quarter. Spread over three levels, it provides around 4,000 m² for exhibitions and the collection; a glass roof, restrained volumes and the honey-coloured Magny Doré limestone define its character. The park was designed by landscape architect Michel Desvigne and received the Luxembourg Architecture Prize in 2011.
The collection comprises more than 800 works in all media by artists from Luxembourg and around the world, along with some fashion and design objects and over 50 commissions created for the building. The focus is on works from 1989 onward; one of the few exceptions is Alvar Aalto’s furniture for the Paimio Sanatorium, acquired in 2000.
