Om museet
The Bonsai Museum in Seeboden on Lake Millstatt has existed since 1976. Since then the privately run centre has devoted itself to Asian bonsai art and Japanese garden design, expanding the grounds and the collection step by step. By its own account, it is now one of the largest and oldest bonsai centres in Europe.
On more than 15,000 m² of exhibition and garden space stand around 3,000 bonsai in about 120 species and varieties, many of them over a hundred years old. They are set within Zen gardens laid out after classical Japanese models. Alongside the display, the centre offers courses, a care service and bonsai for sale.
In recognition of their services to Japanese culture, the museum and its owner Günther Klösch received the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun in 2017. In 2019, the twinning of Seeboden and the Japanese city of Saijo was sealed at the museum.
