Om museet
Schloss Ortenburg, known locally as Paternschloss, stands in the Unterhaus district of the municipality of Baldramsdorf at the foot of the Ortenburg castle ruins. Prince Porcia had the dilapidated earlier building restored around 1710 and handed it over to the Hieronymites as a monastery; the present complex dates back to a conversion carried out between 1767 and 1773. After the monastery was dissolved, the naval officer Gustav Ritter von Gröller acquired the building in 1871 and made it his residence.
After several changes of ownership, the castle passed to the municipality of Baldramsdorf at the end of the 1930s and for a long time served as housing for numerous tenants. In the early 1970s the idea arose of setting up a crafts museum there. The supporting association was founded in 1976, and the museum opened on 19 June 1977.
From 1987 the departments were reorganised and specifically expanded with the help of craftspeople and businesses from Upper Carinthia. Today more than 30 workshops covering about 700 m² show more than 40 crafts and trades – from blacksmith and wheelwright to printer and watchmaker, as well as a pharmacy and a bakery.
The house also holds a collection of Chinese arts and crafts donated by Günther Winkler. Its centrepiece is a portrait of the military commander Koxinga, which Gröller acquired in China in 1858 during the world voyage of the frigate Novara.
