Museum Carantana

Om museet

Excavations in Molzbichl uncovered the remains of the oldest monastery in Carinthia from the second half of the 8th century, as well as an early medieval burial ground. These finds led in 1986 to the founding of the Historisches Molzbichl association, which has also run the Museum Carantana since 1991. The name refers to the Carolingian period, when Carinthia was known as the provincia Carantana.

Of particular importance are the numerous marble interlace stones from the furnishings of the monastery church, including pieces with inscriptions and a unique figural depiction. The museum holds the largest collection of these in the south-eastern Alpine region. In addition there are grave goods of the Carantanians, such as jewellery, belts and clay vessels, as well as the impaled burial, unique in Central Europe, which points to the fear of revenants.

In 2015 an additional museum building was erected, which together with the neighbouring church and the open-air archaeological site forms an ensemble. The museum holds the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality.
