Om museet
Teurnia was a Roman town on the Holzer Berg that flourished as a provincial capital in late antiquity, in the 5th and 6th centuries. Archaeological excavations began as early as 1845; in 1908, during the construction of a water pipeline, an early Christian church was found, and in 1984 the bishop's church was discovered. The best-known feature is the donor mosaic in the cemetery church outside the town walls.
The first museum opened in 1924 above the vestibule of the church; a new building next to the church followed in 1960. Since 2000, the Roman museum has been housed in the former parish barn (Pfarrstadel) near the parish church. It belongs to the kärnten.museum and was first awarded the Austrian Museum Quality Seal (Österreichisches Museumsgütesiegel) in 2013.
The museum displays marble sculptures, inscriptions, milestones, jewelry, weapons and coins that tell of the everyday life and art of the Celts and Romans. The education program offers workshops on Roman jewelry, mosaic drawing and Junior Archaeology, a legion march across the Holzer Berg, and, once a year, a dramatized guided tour. The nonprofit association "Freunde von Teurnia" (Friends of Teurnia) has supported the excavations for decades; the museum is also a stage stop on the Kärntner Jakobsweg (Carinthian Way of St. James).
