Om museet

In 1897/98, Franz von Stuck – then 34 years old and one of Munich's celebrated “painter princes” – had a villa with living, reception and studio rooms built to his own designs on the high bank of the Isar. He designed the rooms, furniture and decoration down to the last detail, combining influences from antiquity, Byzantium and the Orient with the trends of his own time; his furniture won a gold medal at the 1900 Paris World's Fair. In 1914/15 he added a large studio building.

After Stuck's death in 1928 the house changed uses several times, and war damage and rentals took their toll; after the death of his adopted daughter Mary in 1961, it even faced demolition. In 1965 Hans Joachim and Amélie Ziersch bought the villa together with its artworks and furniture, had it restored and transferred it to a non-profit association on condition that it be run as a museum. The museum opened on March 9, 1968.

In 1992 the villa, with its contents, Art Nouveau collection and endowment capital, was donated to the City of Munich; since then it has been one of the city's museums, run as a foundation. A remodeling completed in 2000 created a glazed entrance hall between the villa and the studio building. After a further renovation, with temporary quarters at Goethestraße 54 (2024/25), the museum has presented itself with a new foyer and café since May 2026.

Alongside the historic rooms, which hold the largest publicly owned collection of Stuck's work, Villa Stuck shows exhibitions on art around 1900 as well as modern and contemporary art.
