About the museum
The Old School stands west of the parish church of Schwarzenberg am Böhmerwald. The schoolhouse was built in the 1780s and was converted and given an additional storey around 1859/60; the classicistically structured façades date from that time. Teaching took place here until 1966, and today the building is a listed monument.
In 1992 the Heimatstube opened in the former schoolhouse. It shows a large collection of old, still functional tools of rural crafts, models of typical farmsteads of the region built to scale by grammar school students, and a small selection of Schwarzenberg glass together with an outline of the local glassworks between 1638 and 1864. Separate sections honour the sculptor Jordan Koller, the adult educator Karl Lugmayr and the poet Pater Zyrill Fischer. The large Holy Sepulchre from the mid-19th century is also set up in the building.
The most modern part is the museum on Adalbert Stifter, the best-known son of the Bohemian Forest. It gives an overview of his life, his literary and painted work, and his work as an educator and school inspector, who initiated numerous school buildings in Upper Austria. Special features include a Stifter hologram, a satellite view of the "Ride of Witiko", a monument design by Othmar Schimkowitz from 1900, a listening station with text excerpts and an information column on his reception history. The show "Bunte Steine" ("Colourful Stones") presents the geology of the Bohemian Forest.
On the initiative of the local tourism and cultural association, the house received a contactless access system and audio guides, so that guests can visit it independently.
