About the museum
In the Breitenberg area, flax cultivation and linen weaving shaped life for generations; linen from the Lower Bavarian Forest was in demand far beyond the region. To preserve this craft, the Webereimuseum was established in 1983 in the district of Gegenbach. Several farmhouses from different villages in the Bavarian Forest were dismantled and faithfully rebuilt here, including a Leopoldenhaus typical of the area as well as a Hutsteiner and a Wauhäusel.
The collection covers tools for the entire process from flax to finished linen, as well as equipment for linseed oil production. Five different looms are restored and in working order, and after a short introduction visitors may work at a loom themselves. A separate section is devoted to blue printing and dyeing, with a collection of printing blocks and sample fabrics; one of the rarities is a huge box mangle from 1727.
Also on display are painted farm furniture from the Breitenberg workshop of Seidl, which shows the living conditions of the former weaving families. Flax and old grain varieties are grown on the grounds. On the first Sundays of July, August and September, museum festivals take place, showing the path from flax to linen and other rural crafts; the high point of the year is the threshing festival (Dreschfest) in early September.
