About the museum

The farmstead in Hinterobernau, on the sunny slope above Kitzbühel, has been documented since 1532; inscriptions on the house point to a construction around 1559 and a remodeling around 1760. The two-story Einhof, built in log construction with balconies, a shingled roof (Legschindeldach) and a bell frame, is regarded as a typical farmhouse of the Lower Inn Valley. Because the building served as servants’ quarters for a neighboring farm in the mid-19th century, it was spared major alterations.

In the early 1970s, the dialect poet Herbert Jordan and the Kitzbühel Rotary Club campaigned for the acquisition of the house as a museum. A newly founded museum association restored the building and built up a collection; in 1977 the Tiroler Bauernhausmuseum Hinterobernau opened. Later, relocated outbuildings were added: a wash house and a beehouse from Kitzbühel, a wooden chapel from Kirchberg and a bread oven rebuilt based on historical models.

The house shows what life on a mountain farm was like: a parlor with a large dining table, the Stubengaden (small adjoining room), an open smoke kitchen and sleeping chambers, plus a stable and threshing floor (Tenne) with field implements and tools on several levels. One room commemorates the last resident, a maidservant who lived here for 49 years and was known for her Geselchtes (smoked pork). The museum is run by a volunteer association, which among other things organizes the annual museum festival.
