About the museum

The museum was founded in 1969 by dedicated local historians and at first found space in one room of the old municipal office, the Baroque Riester'sche Priesterhaus from 1724. In the 18th century the building served as a reformatory for priests with improper conduct. In 1994 the house was thoroughly restored; the museum moved into the ground floor, the market town's gallery into the upper floor. In 1997 the Museums- und Kulturverein was founded, which has looked after the museum, gallery and archive on behalf of the municipality ever since.

In 2004 an underground connection with a glass cube was created to the former farm building, the "Waschhäusl". It houses the focus "Felsenreich – Mythos und Erlebnis Kaisergebirge", which examines the Wilder Kaiser from the perspective of geology, fauna and flora, mountaineering and art, with a true-to-nature relief model and a "mountain tour in the museum".

The other rooms deal with local history, the beginnings of tourism, mining, geology, traditional costumes and folklore, as well as personalities such as the composer of the Toy Symphony, Edmund Angerer, and the painter Alfons Walde. Visitor favourites include the roaring cave bear Grim, the finds from the Tischofer Cave, a Bronze Age socketed axe and the poodle Schmecks. On the upper floor the gallery shows contemporary art.
