About the museum

Museum Kitzbühel is one of the oldest museums in Tyrol. In the early 1930s the master locksmith Hans Graswander showed his collection of grave crosses, locks and fittings in the town's empty granary. From 1934 these holdings were newly presented as the "Heimatmuseum Kitzbühel" together with private prehistoric collections and the excavation finds of the Viennese prehistorian Richard Pittioni. Over the decades the collection continued to grow organically, until its presentation barely met modern requirements for interpretation and conservation any longer.

When the ski club moved out of the neighbouring Romanesque south-west tower of the town fortifications, an opportunity for renovation and extension arose in the 1990s, largely completed by 1999. The newly conceived museum, with a design by the Viennese architect Elsa Prochazka, opened on 19 December 2002. Between 2018 and 2021, the former forestry office (Hinterstadt 34) was added, with further rooms for special exhibitions, an event room and a lift.

The tour leads from Bronze Age copper mining on the Kelchalpe via the granting of town rights in 1271 and the heyday of mining and the Baroque to the history of winter sports with Kitzbühel's Ski Wonder Team of the 1950s. A gallery of its own is dedicated to the painter and architect Alfons Walde; a digital museum complements the house.
