About the museum
While a new local water pipe was being laid, a cemetery from the Hallstatt period (around 750 BC) came to light about 500 metres west of Uttendorf's village centre. Between 1975 and 1990, 467 cremation graves were examined there. The grave goods – jewellery made of amber and glass, clothing brooches, bracelets, ceramic and bronze vessels, as well as knives, axes and spearheads – show that the inhabitants traded across the Alps as far as southern Germany, northern Italy and Slovenia.
On the nearby Stoanabichl (Steinbühel), which is connected to the cemetery by an old path, archaeologists found the associated fortified hilltop settlement on the northern slope of the Salzach valley. The finds show that the site was already settled in the Early Bronze Age and remained inhabited until the early Roman period. Besides trade, the main livelihood was copper mining on the Viertalalm above the settlement. A large part of the finds is kept in the Salzburg Museum.
Since 2001 a reconstruction of the Celtic village has been under construction on the Stoanabichl; so far the main house, weaving workshop, pottery and storage buildings have been built. The site is part of the Museumswelten Hohe Tauern, which also include the Felberturm Museum in Mittersill and the Noriker Horse Museum in Niedernsill. On guided tours, visitors learn how people lived and worked here.
