About the museum
In the Schwarzleo Valley, one of four mining districts in Leogang, ore was already being mined more than 3,000 years ago; the Celts are considered the first miners of the area. Leogang is thus one of the oldest mining sites in Salzburg. For centuries silver, lead, mercury, copper, nickel and cobalt were extracted here, and the mining industry shaped the region into the 20th century.
The silver was regarded as particularly high-quality and was even used for the famous Salzburg silver thaler, the Rübentaler. Since 1989, parts of the old gallery system have been open to visitors as a show mine; the centrepiece is the Barbara Gallery, named after the patron saint of miners. The galleries were chiselled into the rock by hand and allow visitors to understand the historic mining methods and the dangerous work of the miners.
The grounds include the Unterberghaus with the Knappenstube (miners' parlour) as the starting point for tours, a stamp mill, a newly built mine railway and an adventure playground. The area around the Knappenhaus can be explored freely; the galleries can only be entered on a guided tour.
