About the museum
The museum moved into the Steinerbauernhaus on the Kirchbichl, a log building around 300 years old that changed owners several times over the years and was at times in church hands. In 1995 the municipality of Kaprun acquired the listed building.
Until 2009 the house underwent extensive restoration: the southeast corner, which had sunk by about 60 centimetres, had to be raised and secured, the roof was renovated, a cellar was excavated and modern building services were installed. The official opening took place on 12 July 2009.
The permanent exhibitions cover power plant construction, early and modern tourism, rural life, archaeology and historic photography. The Machlhütte next to the main house serves as an additional exhibition space; it is a former workshop of the Häuslgut with living quarters on the upper floor and has stood on the Kirchbichl since 2008. In 2022/23 multimedia touchscreens were added. The museum is run by the association VSF Kaprun, which invests proceeds from the nearby Sigmund-Thun-Klamm gorge in local facilities.
