About the museum
The museum is the work of Helmuth Vötter, who was fascinated by technology as a teenager and rebuilt roadworthy vehicles from salvaged engines. The foundation of the collection was a BMW Isetta, his dream car from childhood, which he bought in poor condition and restored by hand. He then bought further historic vehicles at low prices and restored them in his own workshop. At first some people smiled at him; in the end it became a life's work.
Over the decades this grew into an international classic car collection, which the museum regards as a small glimpse into the success story of motorization. Today the museum in Kaprun presents around 200 exhibits from the 1950s to 1970s and earlier on about 1,400 square meters.
On display are, among others, small cars and bubble cars such as the Isetta, Renault 4CV, Fiat 500, Trabant, Goggomobil and Messerschmitt, a section on the designs of Ferdinand Porsche, motorcycles and tractors. Outstanding pieces include the "Steyr-Zeiserl" with 23 seats, a 1893 steam locomotive with a 1915 saloon carriage, and a furnished 1960s apartment. A memorial exhibition honors the engineer Fritz Fend. The museum belongs to a family business with an attached hotel.
