About the museum
Egon Schiele was born in Tulln in 1890, where his father managed the train station. About ninety years later, the city decided to dedicate its own museum to the famous son and acquired the 1898-built former district court prison directly on the Danube embankment. After several years of renovation, the house opened on June 12, 1990, shortly after Schiele's hundredth birthday. A replica cell recalls the weeks the artist spent in pre-trial detention in Neulengbach in 1912.
In 2011 the NÖ Museum Operating GmbH took over the house and redesigned the presentation. Since then the focus has been on Schiele's childhood and youth, his close connection to the railroad and Tulln, and his early works. The works shown come from the city of Tulln's collection, state property and private loans.
On the upper floor the presentation "Egon Schiele Private" approaches the human behind the work, including with listening stations where Schiele's sisters and sister-in-law speak. Another room is dedicated to Anton Peschka, Schiele's friend and brother-in-law. Additionally, the museum offers a 35-minute virtual reality journey into Vienna around 1900. On the ground floor, the "Treasure Chamber" shows annually changing exhibitions with original works. In 2024 the museum received the Austrian Museum Quality Seal for the first time.
