About the museum

Museum life in Tulln began in 1929, when a museum association set up a local history museum in the refectory of a former convent; in 1938 the collection moved into a new building on Wiener Straße. The Roman department has had its place since 2001 in the rooms of the former Dominican convent, which King Rudolf of Habsburg founded in 1280 after his victory over Ottokar as an "imperial convent for noblewomen".

In 2019/20 the exhibition was fundamentally redesigned and combined with the Virtulleum and a documentation on the convent to form the Stadtmuseum Tulln. The focus is on the cavalry fort Comagenis in the province of Noricum, which for about four hundred years was part of the fortified Danube frontier.

The tour spans the arrival of the Romans in the 1st century, fort construction, soldiers' and civilian life, and the Marcomannic Wars, through to late antiquity and the withdrawal of the Romanised population at the end of the 5th century. Original finds are accompanied by tin figure dioramas, comic animations, 3D reconstructions and life-size figures; themes such as trade, migration, religion and hygiene build a bridge to the present. The museum holds the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality.
