About the museum

The roots of the museum lie with Johann Krahuletz (1848–1928), a gauger from Eggenburg who over decades gathered geological, archaeological and folk objects from the region. So that his collections would remain in the town, citizens of Eggenburg founded the Krahuletz Society in November 1900.

A dedicated museum building was constructed for the collection within a year, to plans by the Viennese architect Richard Jordan, the first purpose-built museum building in Lower Austria. It opened on 12 October 1902; as early as 1904 Emperor Franz Joseph I visited the museum. The complex today also includes the former cinema by Clemens Holzmeister (1914–17), which the society acquired in 1986 and saved from conversion into a supermarket, as well as a former furniture factory building that has served as a storage depot since 2015.

Over several floors the museum shows the geology and palaeontology of the region, folk art and clocks from three centuries, and the archaeology of north-western Lower Austria spanning about 30,000 years. The most recent redesigns are the town history of Eggenburg and, from autumn 2026, contemporary history. The museum has held the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality since 2002 and works scientifically with, among others, the University of Vienna and the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
