About the museum
The museum is located in the Neumarkt town hall, a Renaissance building that was formerly the Windhagerische Mauthaus (toll house). The sponsoring association "Schul- & Heimatmuseum Neumarkt/Ybbs" was founded on December 8, 1994 by former mayor Alfred Lichtenschopf and still runs the exhibition today on a volunteer basis.
Spread across ten rooms, the house gives an overview of the town's history in everyday life: a gallery of mayors, firefighting and tobacco cultivation, a general store, "Grandmother's Kitchen" and a shoemaker's workshop show the daily life of earlier generations. Schooling around the turn of the century is documented in particular detail, with classrooms for the lower and upper grades and a teaching-aids cabinet. Further rooms cover money matters, with an old cinema, and a collection of bicycles and motorcycles; skeletons and grave goods from the Bronze Age are also on display.
