About the museum
The Mittermayr heritage farm in Pelmberg was first documented in 1325 and offers a vivid picture of the working and living world on a Mühlviertel farm. Originally a three-sided farmstead, it was extended in the 18th century into a Vierkanter (four-sided farmstead).
Its defining features are the exposed granite stone walls, the decorated gable façades and the massive thatched roof, which weighs around 35,000 kilograms. An 18-metre-long Erdstall (underground refuge) hewn into the granite served as a place of refuge in times of war and persecution.
The Heimatverein Urfahr-Umgebung decided to preserve the farm as an open-air museum. Rooms with original furnishings and an extensive collection of historic farm tools show rural life in the Mühlviertel in pre-industrial times.
