About the museum

The Stadtmuseum Ybbs is located on Herrengasse in a patrician house built before 1330. It shows the historical development of the former sovereign town and sees itself as a small house for history enthusiasts. The city archive, which keeps the town's official records as well as private collections, is housed in the same building.

On display are, among other things, objects relating to Danube shipping and the boatmasters' trade, a Roman stone and other finds, the charter granting Ybbs town status in 1317, the shooting-guild panels of the Privilegierte Schützengesellschaft from 1603, as well as chests and evidence of the guilds. In addition there are a judge's sword, halberds, firefighting equipment, medical instruments, and devotional images and pilgrimage souvenirs.

Models show the old town before the town fire of 1868 and the former Donaudorf castle. A fresco fragment recalls this castle, which had to make way, together with the village, for the construction of the Ybbs-Persenbeug Danube power plant. Another theme is the Ybbser "Elektrische", a tram operated by what was once the smallest tramway company in the world.
