About the museum
The Mariahilf Church on the left bank of the Inn was built between 1647 and 1649 as thanks from the Tyrolean estates for Tyrol being spared in the Thirty Years' War. The parish remains unusual to this day: the state of Tyrol holds the church and parish buildings and appoints the parish priest.
For the many liturgical objects that had accumulated at the church, space had long been lacking. In 2004, therefore, the Kunstkammer Mariahilf was set up in the former Epp'schen Benefiziatenhaus (benefice house), a late-17th-century building west of the church. The house goes back to a foundation by the brothers Sigismund and Maximilian Epp; Sigismund Epp was a professor of theology and rector of the University of Innsbruck.
The exhibition rooms display parts of the historical parish archive, plans and documents on the construction and furnishing of the church, pilgrimage and confraternity life, as well as paintings and sculptures. Among the most valuable pieces are goldsmith's work, altar objects, vestments, including two Medici chasubles of Venetian silk, and the original founding charter of the Tyrolean estates.
