About the museum

The Museum of Mining Tradition is part of the Musei Tarvisio (MUTA), the museum system of Cave del Predil, a hamlet of Tarvisio whose Italian name (cave, “quarries”) refers to the mine. The village is a typical company town: for centuries the Raibl mine was one of the most important lead and zinc mines in Europe, until it closed in 1991, and today it is the Raibl International Geomining Park.

The museum is housed in the building that once held the offices of the mine management and traces the stages of the history of the deposit, which shaped the life of the place and its inhabitants. The route includes period photographs, historical documents and mining equipment, and ends with films and video testimonies.

It recounts the life of the valley and its mountains, the work of the miners and the development of the mine, in Italy and in Slovenia, up to the struggle against its closure. The visit is complemented by the Geomining Park, which is toured with guides aboard an electric little train, and by the military history museum “Alpi Giulie”. Since 2021 the sites have been managed by the Cooperativa Pluriservizi Valcanale together with Sprinter srl on behalf of the Municipality of Tarvisio.

Good to knowThe visit to the mine (Raibl International Geomining Park) takes place only in small groups with museum guides and lasts about one hour. Inside the former mine the average temperature is 6 °C and the humidity about 98%, so closed shoes and warm, waterproof clothing are recommended. In case of heavy bad weather, access to the mine may be prohibited. Booking at least 24 hours in advance at the ticket office is recommended (info@museitarvisio.it, +39 0428 876536).
