About the museum
The museum is housed in the former reception building of Unterwaltersdorf station. The station lay on the Gramatneusiedl–Wampersdorf–Wiener Neustadt line, opened on September 1, 1871; its building corresponds almost unchanged to the type "Aufnahmsgebäude III. Classe" (third-class station building) and is regarded as an important monument of Austrian railway history. Since 2002 only freight traffic runs there. In 1997 the municipality of Ebreichsdorf rented the building from the ÖBB and set up the local history museum.
The exhibition documents the roughly 250-year history of textile production in the region. A special feature is the estate of the Ebreichsdorf felt hat factory S. & J. Fraenkel (1874–1971) with fashion drawings, hats, tools and equipment. In addition there are collections on technology, crafts and everyday culture as well as documentation on railway history.
The permanent exhibition includes rooms on hat making and weaving, a housework room and a crafts room, a railway section with archive and outdoor area, a media room and an air-raid shelter. The museum is run by an association.
