About the museum

The BAXA lime kiln was built in 1893 on the Goldberg above Mannersdorf am Leithagebirge. Limestone quarried in the area was burned in the kiln. Today the complex is protected as an industrial monument and is operated by the Verein Kalkofen BAXA with support from the municipality of Mannersdorf and volunteers.

On the upper floor, the museum shows the importance of limestone, the "white gold", for the region. On display are stone-quarrying tools from chisel to pneumatic hammer, historic vehicles and equipment, and information on working conditions. On the lower level, a gallery hosts changing art exhibitions and events; in front of the kiln stand sculptures by the artist Karl Martin Sukopp and a bucket-chain excavator named "BAXAsaurus".

The site can be reached via a theme hiking trail through mixed forest from Mannersdorf and lies in the "Die Wüste" nature park. Most recently, the association invested in a new staircase that meets today's safety standards and was coordinated with the Bundesdenkmalamt (Federal Monuments Office).
