About the museum

Martin Mühlauer built a water-powered sawmill on the site about 150 years ago. In 1905 his son Josef took it over; in 1907 it was registered as a licensed sawmill trade, and in 1913 came a power plant that supplied the entire village with electricity. In 1948 Martin Mühlauer junior continued the business and had a new sawing hall built. Since 1980 Brigitte and Josef de Mas have run the sawmill.

In 2004 the family set up the "Erlebniswelt HOLZ" in the old sawmill building. In 2007 a museum partnership was concluded with the Swiss association for the preservation of the Kleintal turnery in Steg. Exhibitions followed on the former high-altitude health resort Bad Fusch (2009), on the history of electricity (2014) and on the village history of the Fuschertal (2016). In 2024 the business received the Verdienstzeichen (Badge of Merit) of the Province of Salzburg.

On two floors the exhibition shows the forest as a living community, the growth of the tree, forestry work then and now, the development of sawing technology and woodcraft from the hand plane to computer-controlled machines. There is also wood as a high-tech material, a wood shop with toys, a woodcutters' parlour with coffee and cake and a wooden skittle alley.
