About the museum
The first local museum in Mannersdorf was lost, along with its collections, at the end of the Second World War. When farming and construction work brought numerous archaeological finds to light from the 1960s onward, dedicated local citizens founded the Mannersdorf Culture and Museum Association in 1969 to safeguard the finds, build a new museum and carry out archaeological research in the area.
In 1973 the municipality, then a market town, transferred the former granary (Schüttkasten) of the Scharfeneck estate to the association as a museum building. It is a Renaissance-era grain store that, according to the association, was built in 1579. The museum opened on 26 October 1979; the association still runs it on a voluntary basis today.
The vaulted rooms of the cellar and ground floor house the archaeology and stonemasonry departments, the upper floor with its beamed ceiling is used for events, and the converted attic displays minerals and fossils as well as folklore and local history. The archaeological collection comprises finds from the former Scharfeneck estate territory from the Neolithic to the early Middle Ages and is also recognised by researchers.
