About the museum
The exhibition hall in Sommerein at the foot of the Leithagebirge preserves the work of the ceramicist, sculptor and textile artist Maria Biljan-Bilger (1912–1997). In the 1960s the artist, together with the architect Friedrich Kurrent, had converted a former chapel in the village into a home and studio. Kurrent, her later husband, designed the hall as a place to look after and preserve her extensive oeuvre; construction began in 1995 and was only completed in 2004, seven years after her death.
On display are, among other things, terracotta figures of the post-war years such as the "Water Carriers", reliefs, ceramic sculptures and toy designs. In the outdoor grounds stand four stoneware children's houses that Biljan-Bilger created in 1967 for the Floridsdorf outdoor pool in Vienna and which were moved to Sommerein in 2003/04.
In the adjoining archive the estate was reviewed and inventoried from 2006; in 2012 the book "Maria Biljan-Bilger. Leben und Werk" with a catalogue raisonné was published. The hall is run by the association of friends of the Maria Biljan-Bilger Exhibition Hall; exhibitions and events also take place there.
