About the museum
Near Frög in the municipality of Rosegg lies one of the largest burial mound fields in the southern Alpine region. A good hundred years ago about 600 mounds were known across roughly 100 hectares; today about a third are still preserved. Excavations began in 1882 after a chance find and brought to light grave goods such as jewellery, ceramics, bronze vessels and the famous small lead figures, including a four-wheeled lead wagon with draught animals.
In 1987 the burial ground was opened up to visitors with a hiking trail, and in 2002 the archaeological park with reconstructed buildings was created. The centrepiece is the princely house, which explains the economy, society and worldview of the Hallstatt period; a large princely grave was prepared as a show grave. In the museum, the original pieces of jewellery from the woman's grave (Mound 120) take centre stage, supplemented by changing exhibitions of the Landesmuseum Kärnten and action days on experimental archaeology.
The Keltenwelt is run by the municipality of Rosegg together with the Verein Urgeschichtszentrum Frög-Rosegg; it is a partner museum of the Landesmuseum Kärnten.
