About the museum
In 1900 Gustav Mahler had a simple, single-room hut with a gabled roof built in a forest clearing above the eastern bay of the Wörthersee near Maiernigg. Not far away stood his summer villa on the lakeshore. In the seclusion of the hut he worked on his compositions during the summer months until 1907: the Fourth to Seventh Symphonies as well as parts of the Eighth were written here.
After the death of his daughter Maria in July 1907, Mahler gave up his summer residence. In 1981 the composing hut was placed under heritage protection and subsequently renovated. It opened as a museum on 7 July 1986; since then the cultural department of the state capital Klagenfurt has run it as a small museum with photographs, sheet music, letters and a bronze bust of the composer; the exhibition was redesigned in 2016.
Mahler's music can be heard in the hut and over loudspeakers outdoors. In summer the hut is also the venue for matinees, readings, theatre and themed walks in the Maiernigg forest. Visitors can reach it only on foot along a forest path.
