Museum of Slovenian mountaineering, alpinism and mountain rescue in Mojstrana, with an interactive permanent exhibition.

Opening hoursAdmission €10

About the museum

The Slovenski planinski muzej presents the development of Slovenian mountaineering (planinstvo), alpinism and mountain rescue, linked with nature conservation and educational content. The first mention of the idea of an Alpine museum dates from 1901, and in 1932 there was a mountaineering exhibition at the Ljubljana Trade Fair. In 1984 the Triglavska muzejska zbirka (Triglav Museum Collection) was set up in Mojstrana; it was run by the Planinsko društvo Dovje-Mojstrana and was also an information point of the Triglav National Park.

In 1997 the collection became part of the Gornjesavski muzej Jesenice as part of the municipal museum. The foundation stone of the new museum was laid in 2007, and it opened in 2010. The building, designed to look like a rock mass and clad in grey sheet metal, recalls high-mountain shepherds' shelters. It has 1,200 m² of space for exhibitions, a library, a hall, a souvenir shop and office premises. The founder of the museum is the Občina Kranjska Gora (Municipality of Kranjska Gora).

The collection comprises almost 5,000 units, of which around 450 objects are on display. It also holds archival material, postcards, more than 10,000 photographs and a specialist library. The museum has received several awards, among them the Živa award for the best Slavic museum in 2017.
