About the museum

The Kosova graščina (Kos Manor) was built in 1521 by Baron Sigmund Dietrichstein, lessee of the Bela Peč estate and vassal of the Habsburgs. The Bela Peč coat of arms is preserved above the balcony door, and sources also call it the old Bela Peč castle. In the 18th century ownership changed among various noble families; in 1812 the merchant Frančišek Pavel Kos bought it, and in 1821 he restored it in the Neo-Renaissance style, with a rustic ground floor, a representative upper floor and a balcony above the main entrance. The interior staircase of green tuff connects all the floors.

At the end of the 19th century the building was bought from the Kranjska industrijska družba (Carniolan Industrial Company) by the Jesenice municipality (srenja). Until 1915 it housed rooms of a folk school, and between the two world wars offices, a court and prisons.

Today the Mestni muzej Kosova graščina, run by the Gornjesavski muzej Jesenice, is the central exhibition venue in Jesenice. Visitors learn the history of the town with the permanent exhibition Mladost mesta rdečega prahu (The Youth of the Town of Red Dust), and the museum also prepares temporary visual-art and museum exhibitions. Civil ceremonies take place in the renovated wedding rooms of the manor.
