About the museum
The Historama was founded in 1993 in Ferlach with about 300 square metres of exhibition space and has grown step by step ever since. Today it covers more than 4,700 square metres and is regarded as the second-largest transport museum in Austria. It is run by the non-profit association Nostalgiebahnen in Kärnten, which operates it through its own operating company.
The collection is housed in former workshop halls of the Kärntnerische Eisen- und Stahlwerke (KESTAG). In 2007 the museum received the Austrian museum quality seal from ICOM Österreich and the Museumsbund.
The range extends from passenger and commercial vehicles through fire engines and emergency vehicles, carriages, bicycles and motorcycles to rail vehicles, trams, shipping and postal history. Among the individual pieces is the purely muscle-powered flying machine of Prince Khevenhüller, built in 1913. Many exhibits can be set in motion at the push of a button, and an LGB model railway invites visitors to join in.
