About the museum
During the Second World War, between 1943 and 1945, a Nazi SS concentration camp, a subcamp of Mauthausen, operated at Ljubelj. About 1,800 prisoners were held there; they built the Ljubelj road tunnel for the German Reich.
On the site of the former camp there is a memorial park with the concrete remains of camp buildings, a crematorium and the memorial “Obtožujem/J’accuse”. The museum in the basement rooms of the nearby Karavla building was renovated in 2021. The new exhibition explains the history of the camp, the system of Nazi terror and the camp’s entanglement with the local environment, using objects, testimonies and a documentary film. In 2021 the museum received the Valvasor Award (Valvasorjevo odličje) for outstanding achievements in museum work.
