About the museum
The Textile Centre Haslach is based in the former factory complex of the Vonwiller company, a landmark of Haslach an der Mühl. A Milanese merchant family with Swiss roots decided in 1819 to build a factory in the town itself in order to produce Mühlviertel linen on the spot. The fabrics, above all Jacquard weaves, were exported to many countries before 1900. When the company had to close in 1999, the municipality bought the complex and, with support from the EU and the province, converted it into a cultural and service centre. In 2006 the neighbouring factory building of the former Obermüller coloured-weaving mill was added.
The Haslach Weaving Museum was founded in 1971 and moved to the Textile Centre in 2012. In 2014 it received the Great Austrian Museum Prize. The centre sees itself as a cooperation of several partners from museum, production, training and art; it is run by the association Kultur in der Fabrik.
The exhibition shows the processing steps from flax preparation to finished linen and the development of hand looms up to the Jacquard machine. Visitors can explore materials and techniques with all their senses, develop their own patterns and, during a guided tour, see the machines in operation. On the production level, modern machines can also be viewed; there is also a shop and an online shop.
