About the museum
The museum is housed in the former military bakery of Longwy, near the Porte de France. It presents the most prestigious creations of the town's manufactories, in two main groups: faience, produced from 1798, and enamels, which appeared in the early 1870s.
The manufactory was founded in 1798 by four local notables and later run by the Luxembourg families De Nothomb-Boch and d'Huart. It first made fine utilitarian faience. From 1874, under the direction of the ceramists Amédée de Caranza and then Charles Gustave Longuet, it developed an instantly recognizable style: raised émaux cernés with an Oriental-inspired design. From 1880 the decorative techniques diversified and, in 1895, the painter Franck Lindley introduced Art Nouveau.
Alongside the utilitarian tableware that made the faience works famous, the museum displays decorative works from the 19th and 20th centuries (sculptures, majolica, barbotine) and émaux cernés on faience that show Longwy's ties to the major European artistic movements. The museum also holds works by the sculptor Jean-Paul Aubé and the painter Paul Georges Klein, both born in Longwy.
