About the museum
The museum grew out of the collection of the Seljačka umjetnička galerija (Peasant Art Gallery), which the Seljačka sloga opened in Zagreb on 1 November 1952. In 1956 the gallery was renamed Galerija primitivne umjetnosti (Gallery of Primitive Art), in 1959 it became part of the Gradska galerija suvremene umjetnosti (Municipal Gallery of Contemporary Art), and since February 1964 it has been housed in its present building on Ćirilometodska Street.
The Hrvatski muzej naivne umjetnosti (Croatian Museum of Naive Art) was established by a special law on 25 February 1994 as the legal successor to the Gallery of Primitive Art. Since then it has operated as an independent state museum institution in the same building in the Upper Town.
The collection comprises 1,936 objects in eight collections: painting, sculpture, drawings, prints, print portfolios, applied art, bibliophile editions and photography. It was built up through purchases and donations and is most strongly represented by Croatian naive art, especially the classics and the Hlebinska škola, as well as by independent artists. The holdings also include valuable works by artists of the Zemlja association and a collection of foreign artists.
