About the museum
The present extent of the Dubrovnik walls took shape in the mid-13th century. The walls were systematically renewed and extended until 1660, when the St Stephen’s bastion on the southern side was completed. The main wall is 1,940 m long and comprises sixteen towers, three fortresses, six bastions, two cantonates, three outer walls with a series of toreta (machicolations), three moats, two side fortresses, one breakwater and two drawbridges. In places it is up to 25 m high; its thickness is 4 to 6 m on the landward side and 1.5 to 3 m on the seaward side. They were built by many known and unknown masters, among them Paskoje Miličević, Juraj Dalmatinac and Michelozzo di Bartolomeo. The walls are managed by the Društvo prijatelja dubrovačke starine, founded in 1952.
