About the museum
Dom Marina Držića is an institution of the City of Dubrovnik’s culture, founded in 1989 and dedicated to the life and work of the greatest Croatian playwright. It is located next to the Domino church, in a building erected after the earthquake of 1667, partly on the site of the demolished house and church of All Saints, of which Držić was rector.
Marin Držić (Dubrovnik, 1508 – Venice, 1567) was not born in this house. It belonged to the Archdiocese of Dubrovnik and served the clergy; the museum is here because the Držić family had patronage rights over the church of All Saints. According to later sale documents, the family house in which Držić was born stood somewhere near the Knežev dvor (Rector’s Palace).
The permanent exhibition is conceived as a place of remembrance of the writer. Using various museum techniques, places from his life are presented: the years of his biography inscribed on the staircase, a family tree, conspiracy letters, reconstructions of collections of objects based on a surviving debt document, and costumes referring to characters from the comedies. The collection also includes theatre programmes, posters and photographs of performances of Držić’s works, portraits by contemporary painters, small-format sculpture and objects of applied art.
