Muzej Franjevačkog samostana Male braće

Museum in the cloister of the Franciscan monastery near Pile, with the old pharmacy from 1317, one of the oldest in Europe.

Opening hoursAdmission €8

About the museum

The oldest document on the Dubrovnik Franciscans, dating from 1235, mentions their monastery of St Thomas at Pile. That monastery was demolished in 1317 out of fear of war, and today’s complex was built inside the city walls by the Pile Gate. After the earthquake of 1667 the church was rebuilt in the Baroque style; it contains the tomb of the poet Ivan Gundulić. The cloister is the work of Mihoje Brajkov from Bar and is among the most beautiful late Romanesque-Gothic creations in the country.

The museum comprises two cloisters – a Renaissance one and a Romanesque-Gothic one – a library with manuscripts, choir books and paintings by unknown masters, and a Renaissance hall with pharmacy objects from the 17th and 18th centuries, old paintings, jewellery and mass vestments.

The Ljekarna Male braće has been operating since 1317 and is considered one of the oldest in Europe, and probably the oldest in continuous operation. For visitors, the old pharmacy has been returned to the lower cloister, and the museum displays part of its collection of around 2,000 prescriptions, furniture and pharmacy equipment from the 15th century onwards. The Ministry of Culture protected it in 2019 as an intangible cultural asset.
