About the museum
The Etnografski muzej (Ethnographic Museum) was founded on 22 October 1919 as the Ethnographic Department of the Hrvatski narodni muzej (Croatian National Museum). Its initial collection was formed by merging several larger collections, among them the ethnographic collections of the Croatian National Museum and the Muzej za umjetnost i obrt (Museum of Arts and Crafts), and the Zemaljska zbirka Salamon Berger (Salamon Berger Provincial Collection). The museum is housed in an Art Nouveau palace on Trg Mažuranića in the Lower Town of Zagreb, designed by Alojz Vjekoslav Bastl; the sculptures on the façade are the work of Rudolf Valdec. The dome of the representative hall on the first floor was painted with frescoes by Oton Iveković.
The first permanent display opened in 1922 and the first post-war display in 1951, when objects began to be shown by ethnographic zones. The building was extensively adapted between 1968 and 1972, and the display created then, in a partly changed concept, has been open to visitors until today.
The holdings include more than 85,000 objects from all parts of Croatia, Europe and the world. The museum publishes the journal Etnološka istraživanja, has a library that is also open to external users, and runs educational programmes from pre-school age to the third age. It is the first-level parent museum for ethnographic museums in Croatia, and in 2015 it became the first museum in Croatia officially open to visits with pets.
