About the museum
The Tehnički muzej (Technical Museum) was ceremonially opened on 14 January 1963, on the twentieth anniversary of Nikola Tesla’s death, and the value of Tesla’s life work was already recognised then: one part of the display, in the Energy Transformation department, was devoted to experiments with Tesla’s transformer in which visitors could also take part. The museum now bears Nikola Tesla’s name and is located at Savska cesta 18.
The planetarium opened to the public on 18 May 1965. It is operated by a specially constructed Zeiss projector, which shows about 5,000 stars, the movement of constellations and planets, and the apparent motion of the Moon, the Sun and comets. The permanent display of the Demonstracijski kabinet izuma Nikole Tesle (Demonstration Cabinet of Nikola Tesla’s Inventions) opened in 1976, on the 120th anniversary of Tesla’s birth; the present appearance of the cabinet is the result of a reconstruction in 2006.
The permanent display includes departments such as Astronautics with the planetarium, aircraft and other engines, a mine and others. Visitors can watch about ten experiments in the Demonstration Cabinet of Nikola Tesla, tour the mine with a guide, and ride the museum tram free of charge on Sundays. The museum is one of the most visited in Croatia.
