About the museum
The Hrvatski školski muzej (Croatian School Museum) was founded in 1901 on the initiative of the Hrvatski pedagogijsko-književni zbor (Croatian Pedagogical-Literary Society), which had begun collecting material for the museum as early as 1871. It is the only specialised museum of the history of education in Croatia. It is housed in the building of the Hrvatski učiteljski dom (Croatian Teachers’ House) on Trg Republike Hrvatske, built in 1889, and within it operates the Pedagoška knjižnica Davorina Trstenjaka (Davorin Trstenjak Pedagogical Library), founded in 1877, with more than 40,000 volumes.
In 2000 the museum opened a permanent display on the history of Croatian education and pedagogy in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It includes a reconstructed classroom from the late 19th century, teaching aids and textbooks, primary, secondary and higher education, the teaching profession, the development of pedagogical thought, art, women’s and men’s handicrafts, the Pariška soba (Paris Room) and the study of the writer Mate Lovrak. Among the textbooks are reprints of the first Croatian primers and the first mathematics textbook in the Croatian language, from 1758.
Because of the consequences of the earthquake, the museum building has been closed to visitors since 2020 until its renovation, and the museum carries out its exhibition and educational activities in the Školica za 5 gallery in Hebrangova ulica 5. Workshops are held in the reconstructed classroom and are adapted to different age groups.
