Muzej Mimara

Muzej Mimara, a museum in a neo-Renaissance palace on Rooseveltov trg (Roosevelt Square), holds the donated collection of Ante Topić Mimara in a new permanent display opened in 2026.

Temporarily closed
Temporarily closed (expected until 2026-11-07). After a multi-year renovation of the building, the museum is temporarily closed to visitors. It reopens to the public on 7 November 2026 with its new permanent display.

About the museum

Muzej Mimara holds the collection of artworks that the collector, painter and restorer Ante Topić Mimara (1898–1987) donated to the Croatian people, on condition that a space be arranged for its permanent display. The donation was agreed in 1973, the museum was founded in 1980, and it opened to the public on 17 July 1987.

The collection is housed in the central part of the neo-Renaissance complex of the former Lower Town grammar schools on Rooseveltov trg, built from 1892 to 1895 to designs by the architects A. Ludwig and L. Th. Hülssner; the historical credit for the construction belongs to Izidor Kršnjavi. The building is a protected cultural monument. Since 1999 the museum has operated as an independent public institution founded by the Republic of Croatia.

The 2020 earthquake damaged the building, after which a multi-year renovation followed, completed in 2026. The façade has been restored to its original golden colour, and the museum has a new permanent display: instead of a chronological presentation, the artworks are arranged under three themes – nature, society and faith – with an additional 27 subthemes. Of the roughly 3,900 objects in the collection, about 1,200 are included in the display.
